How to create the perfect bespoke sign

So, you’ve decided to invest in a bespoke sign? Good choice. Your business is unique and personalised signage is a great way to showcase exactly who you are and what you do. No doubt you’ve got lots of ideas about how you want the sign to look – but if you need a little guidance, our team of experts are always happy to help and here they offer a few top tips to get you started.

  1. Keep things simple

Simplicity is key to an impressive bespoke sign. Try to keep things as clean and uncluttered as possible, and remember, blank space is just as important as the letters and images.

Most people choose to use their company name – but this isn’t the only option. In fact, if your logo has a distinctive image or icon, using that as the focal point of the design can be very effective.

  1. Choose colours carefully

Colour is a great way to reflect your brand’s identity and should be considered carefully. Don’t just select your favourite shade or opt for a trendy ‘colour of the year’. Stick to something relevant. In most cases, the best option is to use the main colour in your business’s logo.

  1. Think about contrast

In order for your new bespoke sign to be readable, its foreground text and background colour need to contrast. Most people choose to combine dark letters with a light backdrop (or vice versa). But if that isn’t possible, outlining each character with a dark line or adding a drop shadow can help.

You should also consider contrast in relation to the sign’s intended location. For example, if you plan to install the sign against a grey brick wall, a grey bespoke sign is unlikely to stand out.

  1. Select a legible font

Try to select a font that is relevant to your business. If you’ve used a particular style before, use it again – just make sure it’s legible. Scripted fonts may look fancy, but they can be very difficult to read, especially when viewed from a long distance. A much better idea is to opt for a clear typeface, such as Helvetica or Gotham, instead – with thick strokes and large counters to improve readability.

  1. Size matters

When it comes to bespoke business signs, the bigger the better. A sign with large bold letters will be much easier to read and much more likely to catch people’s attention. That’s why it’s so important to keep the design simple. If you have a limited amount of space, perhaps try to abbreviate your company name and save any slogans or tag-lines for additional window graphics and decals.
