Cassi Namoda: ‘What Are You Doing By My Sea?’

Project Date: May 2025

Following the outstanding success of the window installation O’Esplendor, by Beatriz Milhazes in 2023, Vinyline were once again invited by Turner Contemporary to collaborate on their prestigious 2025 installation. The new Sunley Gallery Commission, titled ‘What are you doing by my sea?’, is a captivating work by renowned Mozambican artist Cassi Namoda, known for her evocative visual storytelling and vibrant use of colour.

Building on our strong working relationship with the gallery, Vinyline was entrusted with the responsibility of both manufacturing and installing the striking new artwork. This was an exciting opportunity to contribute once more to one of the gallery’s most high-profile and visually ambitious projects.

What we did

In the early stages of development, we worked closely with the artist and curator to explore a variety of material options and production techniques. Our team produced numerous samples, including cut and translucent vinyl tests, as well as printed vinyl samples designed specifically to simulate the appearance of stained glass. After a thorough evaluation, the artist selected the printed vinyl method due to its ability to capture a greater level of intricacy and painterly brush mark details in the artwork.

The final installation is a breathtaking fusion of artistic expression and technical precision. The artwork flows seamlessly across the gallery’s vast window space, casting vibrant, jewel-toned light into the gallery and creating an immersive environment reminiscent of stained glass. The chosen colour palette and design elements not only reflect Namoda’s distinctive style but also harmonise beautifully with the architectural features of the Sunley Gallery.
